The most popular berry in the garden is strawberries (Fragaria). In addition to a pleasant taste, it is famous for its beneficial properties, as it contributes to the accumulation of vitamins in the body for the winter. You need to grow strawberries according to the rules, otherwise you can’t wait for a good harvest. Begin by choosing seeds.

It is better to give preference to not very expensive and medium-sized varieties: they are less demanding. In addition, there are a lot of such seeds in the package, while expensive varieties are packed up to a maximum of 10 pieces.

The best varieties of strawberries

What strawberries to choose for a summer cottage? Currently, there are so many varieties of this berry. There are repair and normal varieties. Ordinary varieties bear fruit once a year, produce many mustaches per season, and are very easy to propagate. Remontants form less mustache, but have time to bear fruit 3-4 times a year, and some of them - even more.

Small strawberry varieties have their advantages: as a rule, a strong aroma and good taste, as well as high productivity. Pay attention: now a repairless bezosny strawberry appeared on sale. Planting strawberry seeds

Compared with the propagation of strawberry mustache, the seed method is more problematic: it takes a lot of time and does not always give a positive result. When buying seeds, you should pay attention to the date of their production: only those not older than a year show good germination.

Planting seeds is carried out in February, after which it is advisable to place the container with planting material for 2-3 days in the refrigerator, and then in a warm place, covering it with a bag. After the first sprouts appear, the package must be removed and the container placed in a bright place. In the phase of two true leaves, plants can be dived into separate pots.

Bushes are planted in the ground in early May. Near the plantings, it is recommended to make holes for mineral fertilizers and spill them with water. Instead of mineral fertilizers, you can use fermented infusion of chicken manure or cow manure.

Strawberry Growing Rules

There are some tricks to growing strawberries from seeds.

To seedlings were good, we sow the seeds in early spring, but you can do this in February.

The soil is light and not too fertile. It is enough to take the soil from the garden and add sand to it.

It is convenient to use a transparent plastic container for sowing. We pierce the bottom of the container in several places. We fill the container with loose earth, leaving a couple of centimeters to the edge. We slightly spray the soil from the spray gun, but do not water it. Shake the container well: the soil should turn out to be smooth, untrammed - that is, as convenient as possible for hatching seeds.

Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil, not filling them with earth, and cover with snow to the edges of the tank. We cover the container with a film or a lid and put it away for two weeks in a cool place, for example, in a refrigerator, so that the snow melts gradually.

The above process is called stratification.

After two weeks, remove the container with seeds on the windowsill. Remove the film or cover until it should be. In low light, use lamps. Watering the planting is not necessary, but it is allowed to spray when the soil dries.

After the emergence of seedlings (in most varieties this occurs after two weeks) in the film or lid we make several holes in order to gradually accustom the seedlings to the environment. We moisten the soil, but do not fill it: high humidity can destroy seedlings. If necessary, thin out the shoots. In the phase of a pair of leaves, the seedlings dive, making sure that the roots do not bend up. You need to deepen the sprouts slightly, gradually sprinkling the earth to the leaves. Then water abundantly.
Before transplanting into the ground, it is important to ensure that the land does not dry out, but also not to zealous with watering. Seedlings do not need fertilizers yet.

Country Tricks: Care Tips

As mentioned earlier, seedlings are planted in open ground by early May. The height of the beds should be 20 cm, and the width - 80 cm: this will prevent over-moistening of strawberries during rains.

Fertilize the soil with potash and phosphate fertilizers, humus. We plant strawberries in two rows, with a distance between bushes of 30 cm. Then we water the seedlings and sprinkle with humus. In the future, watering and weeding should be carried out regularly.

To get a good harvest, it is recommended to feed bird droppings at the beginning of summer planting, and mineral fertilizers at the end of summer. Since plants develop rapidly, they should be periodically planted.

How to harvest seeds yourself

First you need to choose the right berries. It is better to give preference to varieties that are not susceptible to disease and give a good harvest. To take seeds from a strawberry stands near its base or in the middle part.

The pulp from the berries must be cut, dried and rubbed with your hands to release the seeds. You can store them in a glass container.

Why strawberry seeds may not sprout

If time has passed, but the seedlings did not appear, the seeds may have been improperly prepared. Stratification of planting material directly affects its germination.

Another reason is the too deep seeding of seeds into the ground. They did not rise because they did not have enough strength.

Also, possible causes of the problem may be excessive watering, heat, improper calculation of the timing of emergence of seedlings (some varieties require up to a month).
