Juniper medium "Mint Julep" or Juniperus media Mint Julep is a fairly well-known and popular hybrid form obtained by crossing Cossack juniper and Chinese juniper, better known as Pfitzerin juniper.

Juniper medium called "Mint Julep" often receives positive reviews from flower growers and landscape designers. Its planting and basic plant care are not too complicated, and the description allows us to conclude that it is unpretentious and suitable for cultivation in central Russia.

Description and advantages

Juniper of this variety is characterized by the presence of a rather sprawling crown, the branches of which are located relative to the soil at an angle of 45 °. The variety was obtained by breeders of the American nursery of the city of Saratoga Springs. The advantage of Juniperus media Mint Julep is its resistance to adverse weather and climate conditions, including severe winter frosts and dry summers. The shrub can be grown both singly and in group plantings, creating a very decorative coniferous ensemble.

The adult plant is medium-sized, with an attractive wavy crown, which at the age of ten years can be three or more meters wide. A distinctive varietal feature is the presence of a pronounced and very pleasant mint smell. In most cities of the originating country, this type of shrub belongs to the category of industrial, which is due to resistance to negative factors of the urban environment. Juniperus media Mint Julep is perfect for arranging hedges, as well as decorating single or group compositions. The shrub is very popular in the design of rocky and heather gardens, the design of alpine slides and modern landscaping of roofs.

How to plant juniper

Landing Features

Juniper cultivation of this variety is allowed in areas with almost any type of soil, but with sufficient drainage indicators, due to the botanical features of this decorative culture. The plant is photophilous enough, therefore, it is recommended to plant in areas well lit or with slight shading during the day. It is best to combine the planting of Juniperus media Mint Julep with thuja, pine or other species of junipers.

About a couple of weeks before planting, you should properly prepare the landing pit for juniper. For drainage, it is recommended to use pebbles, brick fight or gravel chips. The standard drainage height should not be less than 8-10 cm. A nutrient landing layer based on sand, turf soil and peat mixed in a ratio of 1: 1: 2 should be filled on top of the drainage. With an increased level of soil acidity, preliminary liming is recommended.

The width of the planting pit should be approximately two times the size of the root system of the juniper seedling. The depth of the landing pit can be 60-80 cm. The best time for planting is the early spring. You should also pay attention to the absence of stagnation in the landing area. High humidity can provoke root decay and adversely affect the growth and development of the plant.

When planting, the root neck of the juniper should be placed at the same level with the edges of the planting pit. Despite the insufficient growth and growth, the average density of juniper should not exceed a couple of plants per square meter of usable area. Immediately after planting, bush irrigation is necessarily carried out, as well as careful loosening of the soil in near-stem circles, followed by mulching in order to maintain optimum moisture for rooting.

Care Tips

When growing Juniperus media Mint Julep, it is very important to periodically water and spray the crown in the evening. The average water consumption for watering one adult plant is about two to three buckets. Regular and high-quality watering in hot and dry weather helps to improve the growth and development of the plant.

Coniferous shrubs need timely and proper pruning. Most often, experts recommend slightly cutting branches when forming young plants. Mandatory timely removal is also subject to any improperly growing or dry, damaged branches. It should be remembered that the increased flexibility of the plant makes it prone to deformation, therefore, it is recommended to pin the branches to the soil or to tie them on a vertical support.

Winter preparations

A variety of Juniperus media Mint Julep is characterized by a fairly good resistance to frost and early autumn cooling. However, young or recently planted junipers for winter are best covered. For this purpose, you can use spruce branches or dry foliage. Over time, the juniper shoots become stiff and no longer respond even to sufficiently strong frosts. Therefore, adult plants do not need shelter, but so that the branches do not break off under the weight of the snow mass, they need to be fixed with a strong rope.

Tips & Testimonials

According to experienced gardeners and landscape designers, you should inspect Juniperus media Mint Julep a couple of times a month for disease or pest damage. In central Russia, junipers are quite often affected by aphids, fungal infections, rust or shute. Also dangerous for the plant are needle mites, sawfly or scale shield, moths and caterpillars. For treatment it is necessary to use special insectofungicides suitable for use on conifers.

Juniper: planting and care

Experts note that the presence of overdried or too moist soil, as well as poor nutrition or lack of good drainage can cause a slowdown in the growth or death of the plant, therefore it is recommended not to violate the technology for caring for juniper.
